Increase in traffic congestion hours on Swiss roads
Traffic congestion is an extensive problem affecting the entire road network. In 2017, there was a total of 25,853 hours of traffic congestion. This figure is up 7.4% compared to the previous year. The Swiss Road Transport Association ASTAG (Schweizerischer Nutzfahrzeugverband ASTAG) finds these record highs extremely disappointing, but not very surprising. Therefore, ASTAG is demanding that urgent measures be taken.

The mounting problem of and traffic congestion and the overloaded road network is leading to negative effects such as stress, accidents, delays, and huge economic costs in the order of billions of francs.
Measures that could counteract the problem include expanding the infrastructure, as well as measures that could be implemented more quickly, such as more flexible working hours and teaching hours, remote working, and making use of home office and video conferencing options. In the longer term, traffic congestion could be combated using monetary incentives such as Mobility Pricing.
